Lost (Memories #4)

Description

The initial photo shoot I posted previously was done in a studio setting and was set up using a black cloth to create the background and by tying string across the set. The intention behind the photo shoot was to represent a moment of time in which the model is caught. Each string is intended to represent a memory, and as the model is surrounded by the strings (memories) that she is trapped by her own memories, representing the way we, as a society, are obsessed with time and the past. I wanted to use the photo shoot to present the emotions that the past evoke. This links to the work of Freud, who believed our past memories that are traumatic or upsetting are repressed in the unconscious and can be expressed through dreams. The photo shoot is a representation of this. From there, I went on to expand the idea and took the string out with me into the natural environment on the outskirts of the small town where I live and hung the string in the boughs of a large tree. This second shoot is quite different from the first as it uses a natural setting and natural light. Although similar, the outcome is quite different. There is slightly less feeling of entrapment as it looks less like a cage than the first shoot, and makes it seem like freedom from haunting memories is possible.

Yep, mum still thinks this picture's creepy. She jokes about uni and befriending art students who'll tie me up to take photos. No idea where that idea came from...
